Chapter fourteen

Nikolai

After dropping Gemma off, I called my assistant and told her I wouldn’t return to the office. It was already late afternoon, and I wasn’t in the mood for work. A small bag from Orsini sat on the passenger seat. I’d told Gemma it was a gift for my Mum, but the moment I saw the hairpin in her hands, I knew it was meant for Isabella.

I parked my car in the lot behind Iniquity and knocked on the back door. It was too early for the club to be open, but there would likely be staff there setting up or accepting deliveries. The door opened, and a man said, “I’m sorry, we’re closed, mate.”

“I’m not here as a patron. I…is Ms. Castillo here?”

“Yeah. I don’t know if she’ll be able to talk. She’s reviewing the installations for this weekend’s event,” he replied. He wasn’t rude, but I could tell he wasn’t used to people just asking for his boss.

I followed his instructions and went into the last room. Isabella was standing there alone, wearing only a tiny pair of shorts that barely covered her ass and a sports bra. She tugged on the pole as hard as possible, ensuring it was secure.

“I wasn’t expecting you to show up here. As you can see, I’m a little busy. We have to install three sets of aerial silks downstairs and these portable poles before Saturday for our carnival theme.”

She hoisted herself up the pole, her arm muscles rippling with the force of strength it took to climb.

“You seem like you’ve done this before?” I said, in awe of how she flipped her body so that she was hanging upside down. She hooked her inside leg and moved her arms so they were below her head.

“What strip? No. But I’ve learned that pole dancing is great strength training. You must use all your muscles to hold yourself and control your descent. You also got to be a little flexible and fearless. You can’t be in your head, or you’ll fall. You gotta trust your body to do what you need it to do.”

Isabella made it look easy and practiced. Her thighs squeezed tighter against the pole as she changed positions and slid down slowly, without touching the ground. Then she was in a new pose that appeared like she was almost sitting on the pole. The way her body moved was
